Born and raised near Dublin, Ireland, I have been working as a freelance Business English trainer since 2009. Since 2016 I have worked in a freelance capacity for Cornelsen Verlag GmbH as an author and proof reader.

Since 2016, I have been very pleased to author the practice element of the grammar appendix of Cornelsen’s schoolbooks for Gymnasium students, Access 6 (Federal edition), Access 1-3 (G9 Edition, for example, for North Rhine Westphalia). I have also helped revise and update the accompanying workbooks for this range. In 2019, I, along with two other authors, wrote a new edition of the Cornelsen textbook, Focus on Business (Fifth edition), which is aimed at students of Business and Vocational colleges. In the same year I also authored the interactive online element of Focus on Vocabulary (3rd Edition). In 2017, I wrote a large amount of material for Cornelsen’s smartphone app ‘Clevery‘ which aims to help German Abitur students prepare for their English examinations.

Among the Cornelsen titles I assisted with in proofing were:
Electricity Matters, IT Matters, Business English for Beginners (Teacher’s Guide), 2 titles for the Wirtschaftsgymnasium Baden Württemberg, Focus on Modern Business.

Among the Business English workshops I planned and delivered alone were a series of 6 day-long workshops for senior civil servants in one of Germany’s state governments in 2016 and a 2-day workshop for real estate professionals in 2017.

My teaching is made richer by having lived and worked in three countries – Ireland, France and Germany and by having worked in social work and in the Information Technology sector. By being a student of other languages and also by having worked in multicultural environments I know better the challenges students of English face in their day-to-day and working lives. I aim to provide training which is ‘seriously fun’ and am very much influenced by a task-based learning approach.

In Dublin, Irland, geboren und aufgewachsen, bin ich seit Juli 2009 als freiberuflicher Business-Englisch-Trainer in Berlin tätig. Zurzeit bin ich für den Sprachtrainingsbedarf von 85 Fachkräften verantwortlich – in 12 Gruppen der Stufen A1 bis C1. Von den 12 Gruppen arbeiten 9 in der pharmazeutischen Industrie und 3 im Rundfunk. Darüber hinaus biete ich auch ein One:One-Sprachtraining an – derzeit betreue ich zwei hochrangige Mitarbeiter in der Immobilienbranche.

How I keep my skills up-to-date

Seit 2016 arbeite ich freiberuflich für die Cornelsen Verlag GmbH als Autor und Korrekturleser.  Ich habe mich sehr gefreut, den Übungsteil des Grammatikanhangs von Cornelsens Schulbuch für Gymnasien Access 6 zu verfassen und auch viel Material für Cornelsens neue Smartphone-App Clevery liefern zu können. Die App soll deutschen Abiturienten helfen, sich auf ihre Englischprüfungen vorzubereiten. 

Zu den Cornelsen-Titeln, bei denen ich Korrektur las, gehörten unter anderem:

Unter den Business-Englisch-Workshops, die ich geplant und durchgeführt habe, waren eine Reihe von mehrtägigen Workshops für leitende Beamte in einer deutschen Landesregierung im Jahr 2016 und für ienfachleute im Jahr 2017.

Mein Unterricht wird dadurch bereichert, dass ich in drei Ländern – Irland, Frankreich und Deutschland – gelebt und gearbeitet habe. Dort war ich u.a. in der Sozialarbeit als auch im Bereich der Informationstechnologie tätig. Als Student fremder Sprechen und durch das Leben in einem multikulturellen Umfeld, kenne ich die Herausforderungen, denen sich die Studenten des Englischen im Alltag und im Berufsleben stellen müssen, besser. Mein Ziel ist es, ein Training anzubieten, das seriously fun (“ernsthaft Spaß macht“) und sehr stark von einem aufgabenbezogenen Lernansatz geprägt ist.
