Between 2014 and 2015 I completed Modules 1 & 2 of the Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults. It was a challenging course of study, particularly because I was teaching full-time and my daughters were only 4 and 1 years of age – being a parent to such young children is a lot of work in itself!
I researched and wrote 2,500 word assignments on five specific areas of English teaching and learning. I taught lessons on each of these which were observed and evaluated as part of Module 2.
The five topics were:
Listening: Developing listening skills by focusing on bottom-up processing. My approach involved ‘micro-listening‘ and the contracted forms of going to ( /gʌnə/ – gonna), have got to ( /gʌdə/ – gotta), and, want to ( /wʌnə/ – wanna).
Grammar: Using a task-based learning approach to help students use modal verbs of obligation to talk about the present and the past.
Writing: Using translation to help students write formal letters / emails.
Vocabulary: Raising awareness of collocations with a focus on the language of newspapers.
Vocabulary: Helping students with multi-word verbs (phrasal/prepositional verbs)
